How to Make Clothes Last Twice as Long
What washing, drying and storage actually do to a garment, which habits are worth changing, and the two that are worth more than everything else combined.

Nobody buys clothes intending to wreck them, and almost everybody does. Not through neglect, through routine: the default wash cycle, the default dryer setting, the jumper on a hanger.
The useful thing about garment care is that the damage is mechanical and the mechanisms are known. You are not being asked to be careful. You are being asked to change two settings.
The short answer
Two changes do most of the work. Everything else on this page is a refinement.

If you only do the first two, you will get most of the benefit available, and neither costs you anything.
Washing is the wear
The thing most people get wrong about laundry is treating the wash as neutral: the garment goes in dirty, comes out clean, unchanged. It does not. A wash cycle is fabric being agitated in hot water with detergent for an hour, and every cycle takes something with it.
The lint in your dryer filter and the sediment in your machine are both made of your clothes. The question is not whether to wash, it is how much of the garment each wash costs you.

Two things worth saying about that. First, the study was co-authored with a detergent manufacturer, which is worth knowing even though the result runs against selling you more detergent. Second, the effect is on the garment, not only on the environment: the dye that leaves your t-shirt is the reason your black t-shirt is grey after a year.
The practical version is one line: use the cold or eco setting, use the short cycle, and save hot washes for bedding, towels and things that are genuinely unhygienic.
Heat is what actually destroys clothes
If washing is the wear, drying on high heat is the damage.
This is the single highest-return change available, because it is a setting rather than a habit. Low heat, or no heat, or air.

- Air dry what you can. A rack indoors or a line outside costs nothing and removes the mechanism entirely.
- If you use the dryer, use low. Most of the damage is heat rather than tumbling, so the low setting keeps most of the convenience and removes most of the cost.
- Take things out slightly damp. A garment dried to bone dry has spent extra time at temperature for no benefit, and finishing on a hanger takes twenty minutes.
Wash less often, and know why
The advice to wash clothes less sounds like an excuse. The reasoning is straightforward: if each wash costs you fibre and dye, the cheapest wash is the one you did not run.
What that means in practice varies by fabric, because fabrics differ in how they hold odour.

The habit that makes this work is airing. A garment hung somewhere with moving air for a few hours loses most of what makes it smell worn. It is not a substitute for washing something dirty, and it removes perhaps half the washes you currently do out of routine.
What each fabric actually needs
The rules above are general. Fabrics fail in different ways, and knowing which failure you are guarding against tells you which rule matters most for a given garment.
Cotton. Strong, absorbent, and the fibre the drying research above was done on. It takes washing well and takes heat badly. Cotton is also what shrinks, and the shrinkage happens in the dryer far more than in the wash. Wash cool, dry low or flat.
Wool and merino. The opposite profile. Wool resists odour naturally, which is why a merino jumper goes several wears between washes, and it hates agitation: hot water plus mechanical action makes the scales on the fibre interlock, and that is felting, which is permanent. Cool wash, wool cycle or hand wash, dry flat. Never wring it.
Denim. Heavy, dye-loaded and hard on the machine’s abrasion. Every wash takes visible indigo out, which is why washing jeans often turns them pale in a year. Wash inside out, cold, infrequently.
Synthetics. Polyester, nylon and elastane blends do not absorb water, so they dry fast and never need heat. They do hold odour, because the oils sit on the fibre rather than in it, so they need washing more often than the fabric’s appearance suggests. Heat is the enemy again: a hot dryer can permanently deform elastane, which is why a stretchy garment loses its stretch.
Leather and suede. Not laundry. Leather wants to be wiped, conditioned occasionally and dried slowly and away from direct heat. A wet leather shoe dried on a radiator will crack, because the heat drives the oils out of the hide and nothing puts them back.
How to read a care label without guessing
Care labels look like a code and are actually four pictures repeated with small changes.

Two things worth knowing about labels. The temperature given is a maximum, not an instruction, so washing colder than the label says is always allowed and usually better. And a crossed-out symbol is the one part of a label worth treating as an absolute, because it is the manufacturer saying the garment will be damaged rather than merely worn.
Shoes, which are worth more attention than anything else
Shoes are usually the most expensive thing in a wardrobe per item and the most neglected, which is an odd combination given they are also the most repairable.
Three habits cover almost all of it.
Rotate them. A leather shoe absorbs a surprising amount of moisture in a day of wearing and needs roughly twenty-four hours to dry out. Wearing the same pair every day means they never dry, and leather that stays damp breaks down. Two pairs alternated last considerably more than twice as long as one pair worn daily.
Use shoe trees, or at least do not leave them crumpled. As leather dries it shrinks, and it sets in whatever shape it is in. A tree holds the shape while that happens; without one, the shoe dries into the creases of the last time you walked in it.
Resole before the sole is gone. Once the sole wears through into the welt, the repair is expensive or impossible. Caught earlier, a cobbler replaces the sole for a fraction of the price of the shoes, and a good pair can be resoled several times.
None of this applies to trainers with glued foam soles, which are not repairable and are consumable by design. That is worth knowing before you buy, not after.
Storage, which quietly ruins things
Most storage damage happens slowly enough that nobody connects the cause to the result.
Never hang knitwear. A hanger takes the entire weight of a jumper and concentrates it on two narrow points at the shoulders. Over months the fibres at those points stretch permanently and the jumper develops shoulder points that will not come out. Fold knitwear, always.
Hang tailoring on a wide hanger. The opposite rule for the opposite reason: a jacket has a structured shoulder that needs to keep its shape, and a thin wire hanger deforms it. A broad wooden hanger supports the shoulder as it was built.
Give things room. Clothes crushed tightly together crease permanently and cannot air out. A wardrobe that is comfortably full is doing part of the job of keeping the clothes in it.
Let it dry before putting it away. Anything still damp will smell, and in wool, damp plus dark is exactly what attracts moths.
The repairs worth doing yourself
A garment usually leaves your wardrobe because of a small failure that was fixable and got ignored.

- Sewing on a button. The single highest-return repair skill. Most shirts and jackets come with a spare stitched inside the hem.
- Closing a seam. A split at a seam is thread failing rather than fabric failing, and a running stitch from the inside fixes it invisibly.
- Patching a small hole in knitwear. Wool holes grow. Caught early, a few stitches stop it; ignored for a month, it becomes a hole you can see across a room.
Everything else, take to someone. A cobbler resoling a good pair of shoes costs a fraction of replacing them, and a tailor closing a lining tear costs less than an hour of your time is worth.
Why nine months matters
There is a reason to do all of this beyond your own wardrobe, and the number attached to it is smaller than people expect.
Nine months is one t-shirt not replaced, one coat repaired, one pair of shoes resoled. Everything on this page adds up to considerably more than nine months, which is the unusual case where the cheap option and the right option are the same option.
Two habits that outlast everything else
If the rest of this page falls away, two things survive on their own and both take under a minute.
Empty the pockets and close the zips. A pen in a wash destroys a load. An open zip acts like a small saw against everything soft in the drum for the whole cycle, and it is the single most common cause of pulls in knitwear.
Hang or fold it the same day. Clean laundry left in a basket creases into a shape it then keeps, which creates ironing that did not need to exist. Wet laundry left in the machine develops a smell that needs another wash, which is one more cycle of the wear this whole guide is about avoiding.
Neither is a technique. Both are the difference between a wardrobe that stays presentable with no effort and one that needs constant rescuing.
The mistakes worth avoiding
- Washing everything on the same programme. The default cycle on most machines is hotter and longer than almost anything you own needs.
- Overfilling the drum. Clothes need room to move for detergent to reach them. A packed drum washes badly and abrades more.
- Using too much detergent. Excess does not rinse out, it stays in the fibre, attracts dirt and stiffens the fabric. Use the amount on the box for your load size and water hardness, not a full cap.
- Fabric softener on everything. It coats fibres, which reduces absorbency in towels and breathability in technical fabrics. Wool and sportswear in particular are better without it.
- Ignoring a care label because it seems excessive. It is occasionally excessive. It is also the manufacturer telling you what the fabric will survive, and they tested it.
- Drying on high because it is faster. It is faster, and it is the reason your towels are thin and your t-shirts tear at the shoulder seam.
- Leaving repairs. Every garment that has left your wardrobe because of a missing button left over about five minutes of work.
Getting stains out, in the order that matters
Most ruined garments are ruined at the stain rather than by wear, and almost always by the same two mistakes: waiting, and applying heat.
Two rules cover the majority of cases.
Act while it is wet. A fresh stain is sitting on the fibre. A dry one has bonded to it. Blotting with cold water in the first minutes does more than any product does an hour later.
No heat until it is gone. Hot water and the dryer both set a stain permanently. If a garment comes out of the wash still marked, do not put it in the dryer, because that is the step that makes it final.
Beyond that, the treatment follows the type:

The rubbing instinct is worth resisting throughout. Rubbing drives the stain deeper into the fibre and damages the surface, which leaves a mark even after the stain is gone. Blotting lifts it.
The bottom line
Turn the wash down and shorten it. Turn the dryer heat off. Fold the jumpers, hang the jackets on something wide, and sew the button back on the week it comes off.

Common questions
The questions that come up in front of a washing machine with a garment you do not want to ruin and a care label you cannot interpret.
What temperature should I wash clothes at?
Cold or cool for almost everything, and short rather than long. In a controlled comparison of a 30-minute cycle at 25C against an 85-minute cycle at 40C, the cooler, quicker cycle produced significantly less colour loss, up to 74% less dye release and up to 52% fewer microfibres. Hot washes still have a place: bedding, towels and anything genuinely unhygienic. For ordinary clothes, heat is doing damage without doing much cleaning.
Does tumble drying really damage clothes?
Yes, and heat is the part that does it. Research at the USDA's Southern Regional Research Center found that high-temperature drying cracks cotton fibres, and that those cracks can reduce fabric strength by 25% or more. The lint in the filter is the visible version of the same process. That is your clothes, in pieces.
How often should I wash jeans?
Far less often than most people do. Every few wears is plenty unless they are actually dirty, and airing them out between wears handles most of what washing is being asked to fix.
How often should I wash a jumper?
Wool and merino can go several wears between washes because the fibre resists odour in a way cotton does not. Air them overnight before putting them away, and wash when they need it rather than on a schedule.
What is the single best thing I can do for my clothes?
Stop drying them on high heat. It costs nothing, it takes no more effort than choosing a different setting, and it removes the most destructive routine step in the whole cycle.
Should I iron my clothes?
Only when they need it, and on the lowest heat that works. Ironing is heat and pressure applied directly to fibre, which is the same combination that damages clothes in a dryer.
How should I store knitwear?
Folded, never hung. A hanger concentrates the entire weight of a jumper on two points at the shoulders, and over months the shoulders stretch into permanent points.
Is dry cleaning good for clothes?
It is a solvent process, not a gentle one, and repeated dry cleaning is hard on structured garments. Use it for suits and tailoring when they are genuinely dirty, and brush and air them the rest of the time.
