Most style advice assumes you already own a wardrobe and want to improve it.
This one assumes you own five hoodies and a pair of trainers you have had since
school.

## Start with fit, not with shopping

Before you buy anything, understand what fit means, because it is the only
variable that separates looking put-together from looking like you borrowed
someone's clothes.

A shirt fits when the shoulder seam sits on the corner of your shoulder, not
above it, not down your arm. Everything else about a shirt can be altered by a
tailor for very little money. The shoulder cannot.

## The twelve

1. Two pairs of dark, straight-leg jeans
2. One pair of tailored trousers in charcoal or navy
3. Three plain t-shirts that fit at the shoulder
4. Two oxford shirts, one white and one light blue
5. One knit jumper in a neutral colour
6. One overcoat or a good jacket for your climate
7. One pair of leather shoes

## Where to spend and where not to

Spend on shoes and outerwear. These are worn most, last longest, and are the
hardest to fake.

Do not spend on t-shirts. A plain t-shirt from a mid-range retailer, tailored to
fit, is indistinguishable from an expensive one after a single wash.
